Position Purpose

ACAP’s Executive Director is responsible for the strategic vision, successful leadership and management of the organization. The Executive Director is the face of the organization and works in partnership with the staff and Board of Directors on the ultimate vision of ACAP, governance, program planning, resources development and implementation of outstanding programs and services.

The Executive Director provides oversight of the organization to achieve Board approved goals and objectives; to provide organizational structure that achieves business growth and motivates staff to accomplish the stated mission of ACAP, represents ACAP to local community associations and at community events putting forth positive aspects of the organization through a strong articulation of the strategic vision. The Executive Director will recognize the ultimate governance responsibility and fiduciary obligation of the Board of Directors as outlined in the ACAP bylaws.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

A.  Leadership and Oversight

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization - review and update progress achieved quarterly with the Board and Staff
  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization's activities, oversee Board development and identify skills that are lacking
  • Serve as signatory for contracts and organizational agreements
  • Determine and provide staffing requirements for organizational management and impact
  • Maintain a culture that attracts, retains, and motivates a highly diverse professional staff
  • Actively manage staff while developing each person to their highest potential
  • Review each staff members’ performance annually
  • Establish individual staff member’s goals and objectives for the coming year
  • Stay abreast of the current legislative, cultural, medical, educational and other changes that may impact ACAP and its members

B.  Fund Development, Program Growth and Community Relations

  • Develop a strategic plan th
  • Communicate with community stakeholders to keep them informed of ACAP’s work
  • Establish effective working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve goals
  • Create and maintain a resource development plan to increase the funds of the organization from private and government sources and individual donors
  • Manage the researching of funding sources, the execution of annual fund development plans and the writing of proposals to increase the funds of the organization
  • Act as a spokesperson and representative for the organization
  • Represent the organization in business development and fundraising opportunities
  • Secure financial commitments from funding sources to meet program budget revenue goals; maintain effective communication with all these sources
  • Serve as the lead professional in procuring individual, major gifts from current and future donors
  • Ensure that all legal reporting requirements are satisfied


C.  Operational Planning and Management

  • at works to increase revenue sources through fund raising
  • Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its members, Board of Directors, major donors and collaborators
  • Supervise the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Draft policies for Board approval and prepare procedures to implement organizational policies
  • Supervise the preparation of monthly billings and collections
  • Provide support and insight to the Board by preparing timely monthly operational reports


D.  Financial Planning and Management

  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow
  • Work with the Finance Committee to provide the Board with monthly financial reports
  • Complete the annual audit by working with staff and outside auditing firm
  • Ensure that compliance with all state and federal requirements
  • Ensure that sound financial record and accounting procedures are followed

E.  Program Planning and Oversight

  • Ensure programs and services offered by ACAP contribute to the organization's mission and reflect the priorities of the strategic plan
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of these programs to members
  • Provide leadership and supervision to staff and interns
  • Oversee the delivery of programs and services in a professional manner consistent with ACAP policies and values
  • Ensure the development and implementation of policies and procedures for programs
  • Design new programs and program evaluations, in partnership with staff
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of each program at a minimum of once a year
  • Ensure programs financed by grants meet or exceed grant scopes and outcomes

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Degree preferred in Social Services, Non-Profit Management, or an equivalent area of study
  • Five or more years’ experience working in a series of positions with progressively greater responsibility required
  • Three years of leadership and supervision experience is required.
  • Previous reporting to, or working with, a Board of Directors experience preferred.
  • A successful history of working with adults with disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Committed to the mission of ACAP with the ability to communicate that mission effectively
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of not-for-profit program and infrastructure administration
  • Strong background in working with financial systems; invoicing, budgeting, understanding financial statements and annual planning
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people (i.e. people with disabilities, potential donors, community leaders, volunteers, staff members)
  • Demonstrated experience in the creation of new funding sources
  • Ability to actively engage with all types of personalities to better assess the challenges and opportunities of the community as it relates to the mission of ACAP
  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership and accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, and / or the nonprofit sector
  • Levelheaded diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Knowledge of systemic, societal issues relating to people with disabilities, and the ability to effectively articulate these issues to the public
  • Familiarity with the current community challenges and opportunities relating to ACAP’s mission
  • Understanding of all federal, state, and local regulations applicable to voluntary sector organizations, including: employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities, taxation, health coverage, etc
